LEENA NIO BETWEEN LINES at ANNAELLEGALLERY [SE]
LEENA NIO – BETWEEN LINES
2 APRIL – 8 MAY 2016
In her second exhibition at ANNAELLEGALLERY, Leena Nio presents a new series of paintings which all have references to the nature. In some paintings the landscape is outlined, in others unknown. Figures such as birds, dragonflies, plants and spiders appear to be embedded and absorbed by the background, painted as silhouettes. By combining both elements in one image, Leena Nio creates paintings that challenge the viewer’s ability to quickly gather information, organize, and interpret what one sees.
Mixing detailed brush strokes with impulsive expression, Leena Nio’s paintings are both precise and spontaneous. By playing with the surface and depth of the paint itself, she experiments with the thickness and structure of layered and poured paint. With emphases and distortions in visual depth, Leena Nio combines organic shapes with geometric forms and strict lines.
Leena Nio (1982) received her MFA in visual arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki in 2010. The same year, Leena Nio was awarded the prestigious Ducat Prize of the Finnish Art Society and in 2014 she was nominated for Ars Fennica Art Award. Recently, Leena Nio has shown her works at KIASMA – Finnish National Gallery, The Armory Show, Galerie Forsblom, Copper Smithy, Fiskars, Galleri Forum Box, ANNAELLEGALLERY (2013), ARCOmadrid among others. Her works are included in a number of Finland’s most important public art collections, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Sara Hildén Art Museum, and the Saastamoinen Foundation Collections. The artist lives and works in Espoo, Finland.
